**Once upon a time** on a castle on a hill lived a Duke and his family. Day in and day out they screamed for the fool to dance and sing, to laugh and cheer, until she nearly fainted from exhaustion every night. **One evening** a shadow came to her meager home, speaking softly about what one would pay to turn the tables, to drink deeply of revenge and to have the last laugh. **"Every dawn I'd ever have"** she replied and the shadow thought that was the funniest joke she ever had told. **The shadow** came inside and it whispered the primal fear that finds us all in the lonely dark, alone with only us. **The fool** suddenly became ill, only arriving in the evenings to entertain. So mezmerizing her stories, how wild her charms, nobody thought anything amiss when she hurried home before dawn. **Then one day** the Duke's son passed, pale and weak. Then his next child. Then his wife. And as the Duke wept and demanded his fool shake his maliase he also fell ill. He passed, hearing the laughter of the fool one last time. **It's said** that a new Duchess runs the castle, throwing masquerades, balls, and Galas.
